The only redemption to this book I can envision for John is to write a sequel that gives the bad guy his punishment. The story sounded a lot like what happened in Erin Brokavich's movie, which has happened in many communities, so it would not be an outlandish fairy-tale for "good" to triumph!

You know that's exactly how I felt!!! I kept waiting for something to happen to him....maybe, the yatch involved in an fatal crash...one of the victims of the krane polution found a way on the yatch and blow him to kindom come or something in that nature! But I had to get a dose of reality?! That's not why I read fiction. Was I disappointed? Yeah.

Why couldn't Trudeau's head been chopped off as he rode on the highest point on his yacht????? Some wires should have been hanging low or something to make his nonsense and greed come to an end!
I am so disappointed with the ending of this book that I can't put it into words. I was so excited reading the book and expecting a different end because in reality the bad guy always gets the upper hand, so I really believed that Grisham would give this a wonderful twist. So I am just utterly disappointed. Either the book should have been longer so we can see the eventual fall of Trudeau or Grisham should have given us a glimpse of an alternate ending in his author's notes. We really needed another couple of chapters so we can see something terrible happen in Trudeau's life and see Fisk have a change of heart and sue the doctor or bat manufacturer.
along that line

I absolutely loved The Appeal. Couldn't put the book down toward the end. However, I am ready to read a happy ending. Does the good guy ever win?

I finished it this morning and was very disappointed by the ending. I really enjoyed the rest of the book. The ending was not only depressing but I thought it just fell flat.
If this one ever gets made into a movie, you'll have to change it by blowing up the yacht or something. I kept waiting for something to happen and it just ended.
Boo! Hiss!

I just finished reading the Appeal. Let me preface that I have read all of Grisham's books and look forward to each release.

I thought the Appeal was a great book with a gripping story line which could have led into so many directions it was hard to put down. I like most of you, did not like the ending but......

There could be a sequel brewing
or
John Grisham wants us to use our imagination on what happens with an Appeal to the US Supreme Court
or
Maybe Grisham just wanted the ending to portay the dasterdly evil that actually permeates our legal system

I finished the book in the mens room at Miami International this morning and was so dismayed with the ending
that I left it in the stall.....

Hope the next book has a better ending.

Rick, I can appreciate how you explained the possibilities of why the ending. I agree with you, however, was so dissapointed by the ending that like you, as soon as I read the last sentence, I stood for what seemed like an eternal minute and my jaw dropped!!! Yes, I was so mad I immediately tossed the book in the trash! (note: My siblings and I usually share our books, they never got this one, and whats more, I told him what an awful ending it had!!!)

I actually liked the book. True the ending was not that happy but come on some of you are over reacting. John Grisham is still a fantastic author. You'll get over it. I can't wait for Jan. 27th. I bet you guys can't either.

Being a great Grisham follower I must say this was an intriguing book. I loved the fact that Carl T. wasn't hurt but played the role perfectly and got twice fold his money. He was smart, unfortunate for the town and all the deaths. I loved the race and the private Jets and all the Drama with the Justices'. I want to commend John on a well written book. I would love to see this turn into a movie. I believe people do not understand in Law whether you want to believe it or not you cannot bring your moral issues to the table, it is all about the Law and upholding it with facts and evidence. I mean dont get me wrong I am no defense attorney..lol.. but hey if you say that you should tear each page out n do that with it, thats a little too far.
As this is a Discusion board so i am glad to hear reasons for disagreement.

Looking forward to hearing from you all....

Well...Not upto the mark! No matter how it ended, it lacks that crisp way of story-telling. The plot itself denies to accomodate the little surprises unlike his previous novels. It frequently borders on being a campaign documentary. JG, you 've tuned us so well that we always want to go up one notch higher. Hoping to get thrilled by the Associate!

I thought the ending was very disappointing. Ruined the whole book for me and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that asks! And that's saying a lot from me since I've been a avid fan from Book 1. And yes, I know that life doesn't always have happy endings and that the good guys don't always win. But this was FICTION, not real life, and I read to be entertained! Thus, the good guy should always win!!!!!!! Overall, the book left me depressed! John, you just moved down several notches from my favorite author list! I won't be in any hurry to read The Associate, if at all.

I am a very big fan of John Grisham Books. Have many movies as well. One of my favorite authors. I am a great reader. I love to read, more than any other thing in my life.

I did not like "The Appeal" The ending was awful. It is like you wrote a book and didn't want to finish it, so you just gave it the ending. I will still read John Grisham books, but am very disappointed in this one.
